SV softball stays hot with dominant playoff win

WEXFORD — To say Seneca Valley’s softball team is hot would be inaccurate.

The Raiders are scorching.

Seneca Valley used strong pitching from freshman Lexie Hames and a few home runs to overwhelm defending WPIAL 6A champion Bethel Park, 17-1, in four innings of their quarterfinal playoff game Thursday afternoon at North Allegheny.

The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but was moved back due to inclement weather. The Raiders obviously didn’t mind waiting.

Hames struck out eight while allowing just the one run. She added three hits at the plate, including a pair of two-run doubles and a home run.

Madi Gross drilled a pair of homers — both during a nine-run fourth inning — and had three hits, collecting five RBI as well. Lina Chardella hit a two-run homer and had three hits.

The Raiders (11-6) have won six straight games. They’ve outscored their last three opponents — Bethel Park, Moon and Franklin Regional — by a 50-4 count.

“We’ve been working hard on our hitting and we’re picking up the spin really well at the plate right now,” Seneca Valley coach Marlesse Hames said. “We’ve made some adjustments in our lineup and that’s worked out well for us.”

Lexie Hames has moved to the No. 5 spot in the lineup. She has 13 home runs on the season while Gross has hit 11. Chardella’s home run Thursday was her first of the year.

“That was pretty sweet for her,” Coach Hames said.

Mia Ryan, who had a single, recently moved to the No. 3 spot in the Raider batting order. Bella Gross, a freshman, recently joined the lineup and bats eighth. She had a single and RBI Thursday.

Fourth-seeded SV will face top-seeded Hempfield (13-3) in the WPIAL semifinals Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. The Raiders’ current win streak began with a 2-1 win over Hempfield on April 29. The Spartans were undefeated at the time.

“We’re looking forward to playing them again. We want to keep this thing rolling.” Coach Hames said.
