Virginia Rettig

Rettig

Virginia Jane “Ginny” (Williams) Rettig, 93, of Butler, went to be with Jesus on May 10, 2022. She was surrounded by her children.

Ginny was born March 13, 1929, in Craigsville, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Walter Williams and Grace (Blose) Williams.

She graduated from Butler High School in 1947.

She married her childhood sweetheart, Floyd Rettig on Aug. 1, 1947, after he returned from World War II. Together, they built their home, brick by brick and memory by memory. She often recalled mixing up mortar with her babies at her side, so it would be ready to lay bricks as soon as Floyd got home from working all day as an electrician. She resided in the home they made together in Butler Township for almost 70 years, right up until her passing, thanks to the loving assistance of her children.

Ginny enjoyed nothing more than having her house full of family and friends, whether it was for everyday visits or special holidays and picnics. Her table was always filled with food, and it was impossible to leave her house hungry!

She especially loved spending time with her sons, Leroy (June) Rettig of Butler, and Dennis (Joan) Rettig of Prospect; her daughters, Phyllis (Jerry) Kaltenbaugh of Butler, and Karen (Barry) Blum of Chicora; her grandchildren, Kristina Edwards, Casey (Ryan Meisberger) Glew, Cortney (Mike) Graham, Garrett Rettig, Benjamin (Brittany) Rettig and Jacob Rettig; her great-grandchildren, Jodice (Odunayo) Titunyemi, Mackenzi and Lloyd Edwards, and Caleb and Nolan Graham; her great-great-grandchildren, Oluwaseyi, Oluwatobi and Iyanuoluwa Titunyemi; seven stepgrandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Ginny and Floyd were lifelong members of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where they also belonged to the Good News Bible Class. She spent many hours volunteering with children’s Sunday school, 3T, Katie’s Kitchen and funeral dinners. Her hands were always busy doing for others. She especially enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting, quilting and sewing for people. She helped make hundreds of quilts over the years that have been distributed all over the county and the country.

The Rettigs were charter members of Buco Trailer Club in 1965, and enjoyed camping and traveling across the United States. Ginny met with her Girls Club to play cards and they enjoyed meals together from 1952 to 2017. Along with her husband, she belonged to a couples club of good friends, who met regularly from 1947 to 2013. She worked at many jobs throughout her life, including at Whelan’s Drug Store, as a secretary to the Butler City Recreation director, a library aide at Butler elementary and junior high schools, and babysitting in her home. But her favorite role was being a mom and grandma. She cared deeply for her children and grandchildren, and often taught them how to sew, how to bake her famous cookies, cakes, buns and cinnamon rolls, and how much Jesus loved them.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Emanuel Rettig, who passed away on June 22, 2013; her parents; three brothers, Frank, George and Ernest Williams; and three sisters, Norma Hayes, Zetta Mae Pistorious and Pauline (Clowes) Pomeroy.
