Anna Campbell
Anna Marie “Huncy” Murrin Campbell, 91, of Slippery Rock, died following a period of declining health on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at home surrounded by her family.
Born in Butler, June 5, 1930, Anna was the youngest child of Anthony and Anna Herbst Murrin.
She married George Henry Campbell on Aug. 4, 1950, after many rollerskating dates at Etna Springs Roller Rink.
She was a member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church.
As a young girl, Anna was a proud member of the Lyndora Drum & Bugle Corps. She graduated from Butler High School in 1948. She began her working years before graduation at Grants in downtown Butler, followed by positions at Eisler Nurseries, Armco Steel and Slippery Rock State Teachers College, where she held the position of secretary to the president.
Anna spent most of her working life as secretary/treasurer for Campbell’s Asphalt Products and Paving Company, founded by her husband in 1966. When her children saw her in action, they learned the values of honesty, integrity, accuracy, persistence, dependability and self-reliance. She capably juggled the responsibilities of her work-from-home occupation with her housekeeping and parenting duties. Amazingly, she always prepared a hot sit-down dinner every day.
Anna was a devoted mother and grandmother. In fact, the favorite name she loved to hear was “Gram.” She was a gentle spirit, yet a mighty force. She held firmly to family ties and did everything she could for family. Without a doubt, family gatherings took priority. Whether get-togethers were Sunday dinners at the home of her parents, birthday parties for the kids, welcome-home dinners for the Rayboulds or the Murrin family reunions, she was “all in.” (And, if time allowed, she served up the best apple pie.)
Anna was her family’s greatest fan and encourager. She eagerly attended her grandson’s athletic games, and she chauffeured him to many golf tournaments and followed him on the course. She supported endeavors from music lessons to Scouts. In addition, she was an avid fan of the Steelers, Pirates and professional golf. She loved family vacations on Sanibel Island. Playing cards and games were her favorite pastimes.
After seeing firsthand the need for CPR training, Anna spearheaded a Start-A-Heart community event in coordination with the American Heart Association and Slippery Rock University in 2001. She also donated AEDs to the Slippery Rock Police Department and the ARC at SRU.
Surviving are three daughters, Martha Campbell of Mars, Jane Prokay (Mike) of Grove City and Carolyn Cherbonneau (Jim) of Slippery Rock; a grandson, Ryan Prokay of Bradenton, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Anna was preceded in death by her husband, George Henry Campbell, who died on Feb. 22, 2000; her sisters, Margaret Uram, Martha Walker and Helen Acquaviva; her half-sister, Lena Sequite; and her half-brother, Clarence Dickey.
Her family extends deep gratitude to her doctors, nurses and caregivers who went above and beyond to care for her in her home.
