Several members of Mars Area High School Band were selected by solo audition for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) Region Band Festival that was March 11 and 12 at Mt. Lebanon High School.

The students are juniors Ian Fuechslin (oboe) and sophomores Alex Schumann (French horn) and Meghan Smith (clarinet). Donald McKinney, a Mars Area graduate (Class of 1995) and University of Colorado Boulder director of bands and CU Wind Symphony conductor, served as guest conductor.

Pine-Richland/Mars Area U.S. Air Force JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Drill Teams took first place overall at the WV State Championship “AFA” AFJROTC Drill Meet Feb. 26 at Parkersburg South High School in Parkersburg, W.Va.

The JROTC earned first place in the Uniform Inspection, Varsity Unarmed Drill Team and JV Unarmed Drill Team categories as well as second place for its JV Armed Drill Team and JV Color Guard.

Two teams of Mars Area High School students competed in the 2022 Western Pennsylvania High School Science Bowl on Feb. 26.

Mars Team #1, made up of seniors Rohan Narasimhan and Luke Weiland, junior Cole Winstead and sophomores Declan Abbey and Mitchell Kulfan, was among the top 16 teams in the competition. Mars Team #2 of seniors Timothy Jayamohan and Raghav Kalbhor and juniors Lindsey Gourash, Andrew Olson and Ethan Stewart advanced to the first elimination round.

The students, who competed against 41 teams from local high schools, were asked questions related to biology, chemistry, earth and space, energy, mathematics and physics.

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley High School senior Daniel Spear has been named a finalist in the 67th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program held by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

He is one of approximately 15,000 finalists and will now advance to the next level of the program where he will have the opportunity to earn a National Merit Scholarship.

“We are very proud to have Daniel represent Seneca Valley and achieve the level of National Merit Scholarship Finalist,“ said Bob Ceh, Seneca Valley Senior High School principal. “This is a prestigious award that one qualifies for because of outstanding academic achievement as well as diligence and dedication to the process of learning.”

About 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

Breanna Kyle of Sarver was inducted into the Eta Sigma Chapter of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society at Elmira College, Elmira, N.Y.

Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) has three major objectives: to promote scholarship in the biological sciences, to promote the dissemination of biological knowledge, and to encourage research.
