Mars Area Middle School eighth-grader Julian Coquelet competed in the Tri-Bowl “Presidents” academic competition March 1 at Grove City College

Coquelet earned second place overall in the Middle Division (grades 7-8), and went undefeated in the second round of the competition.

“Presidents,” a question and response game, develops students’ understanding of the personalities, historical contexts, political decisions, and other events surrounding presidents of the United States. The annual competition is open to students in grade four to 12 at Butler, Lawrence and Mercer county schools.

The Center Township PTO challenged Center Township Elementary School students to bring in boxes of cereal to create a cereal box domino chain and then the boxes would be donated to the Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program.

The class per grade that brought in the most boxes won a chance to watch the domino chain live in the gym while the other students will be watching in their classrooms.

Students collected/donated 856 boxes of cereal to be donated to the backpack program. Two students, Jonathon (first grade Mrs. Matos’ class) and Shane (third grade, Mrs. Lydick’s class), went above and beyond when collecting cereal, and they were rewarded by pushing the first box to start the chain reaction.

CT PTO was told that each child in the Kids’ Weekend Backpack Program, within the Butler School District, will be going home with three boxes of cereal over the remaining course of the school year.

Mrs. Matos’ first-grade class at Center Township Elementary School collected the most cereal boxes, 125, for the domino chain. Submitted photo
