BEREA, Ohio — Six Butler County students were among over 660 students who earned scholarships at Baldwin Wallace University this fall.

Over 400 named scholarships provide more than $3.8 million to help students attend, persist and graduate from Baldwin Wallace University.

The scholarships vary in requirements, with many specifying financial need, a course of study, involvement on campus or a commitment to excellence in a particular field. The following local students earned scholarships:

Zane Gagliardi of Butler, a graduate of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School majoring in theatre acting and directing, earned the Mary Lou Allman and Family Scholarship;

Reed Kruger of Lyndora, a graduate of Butler Area Senior High School majoring in theatre acting and directing, earned the Joseph & Berneice Smith Scholarship;

Alivia Leyland of Harmony, a graduate of Riverside High School majoring in arts management and entrepreneurship, earned the Kathryn Lutz Bowman Scholarship;

Isabella Moosa of Zelienople, a graduate of Seneca Valley Senior High School majoring in psychology and criminal justice, earned the Dr. S. Lee Whiteman Psychology Scholarship and the Reed Family Scholarship;

Zach Ottenweller of Mars, a graduate of Mars Area High School majoring in media production and sport management, earned the David Allman Broadcasting Fund Scholarship;

Laila Tyler of Butler, a graduate of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School majoring in theatre acting and directing, earned the Theodore S. Bogardus Scholarship.

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley Senior High School Academic Decathlon Team placed first and won a myriad of medals in the past two local competitions.

With a score of 25,020 points, the team took first place against 12 other local schools Nov. 13.

With an almost 4,000-point lead, the team placed first and took home 23 medals at the local competition Dec. 4.

Students competed in the following events: Science, economics, social science, mathematics, art, music, literature and essay.

JACKSON TWP — Thirteen Seneca Valley High School students were accepted into a juried art show and four were named winners at Slippery Rock University's 2021 Regional High School Art Exhibition last month.Winners included junior Emma Bedell and senior Zatara Whetstone in the painting/drawing category. Seniors Sydney Hunt won the SRU Potters Guild Ceramics Award and Julia Lingenfelter was awarded the SRU Art Club Students' Choice.All Seneca Valley students are under the direction of Jason Woolslare, Jason Shorr and Megan Bonistailli, high school art teachers.———Butler High School student Emma Jarvis, 15, of Butler, was crowned Jr. Miss Keystone State Rodeo 2022 on Nov. 20 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. She is the second queen to wear the Jr. Miss crown.Jarvis is looking forward to using her platform to educate the public about the rodeo industry. In addition to winning the crown, she also won the photogenic award, the personality award and tied for the speech award. She will begin her one-year reign Jan. 1.The mission of the Miss Keystone State Rodeo Queen Program is to select young ladies from Pennsylvania to be ambassadors for the sport of rodeo, while being role models for younger generations.———JACKSON TWP — Five Seneca Valley seniors, Madelyn Gross, Grace Hines, Julia Lingenfelter, Cooper Sainiak and Tyler Yurich were named candidates in the competition for a Special Scholarship to be awarded through the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.A Special Scholarship is a corporate-sponsored award. To be considered for a Special Scholarship, students must meet the sponsor's criteria and the entry requirements for the National Merit Scholarship Program. They also must submit an entry form with the sponsor.Madelyn's sponsor is the Liberty Mutual Scholarship Foundation, Grace's is W.W. Grainger, Inc., Julia's is the PPG Foundation, Cooper's is The UPS Foundation and Tyler's the Norfolk Southern Foundation.———

Sophia G. Wiest of Butler won a $3,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Landscape and Nursery Association Foundation.Weist a Pennsylvania College of Technology horticulture student is majoring in entrepreneurial innovation and landscape/plant production technology, received $3,000.The PLNA Foundation provides resources to encourage research, to reward scholarship, and to promote the values and benefits of ornamental horticulture. Its scholarship program is open to students from Penn College, Penn State, and Delaware Valley and Temple universities.
