Mars, Slippery Rock girls win openers
A 20-point second quarter spurred Mars' girls basketball team to a 62-39 victory over Mercyhurst Prep in the opening round of the Slippery Rock Tip-Off Tournament.
Ava Black scored 16 points to lead the Planets, Alexa McDole added 13 and freshman Vita Vargo 12.
Slippery Rock 44, Sharpsville 30 — Ella McDermott's 11 points included three treys as the Rockets won at their own tournament.
Slippery Rock will face Mars in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
DuBois Area 39, Moniteau 34 — The Warriors fell in the opening round of the Brockway Tip-Off Tournament.
Catherine Kelly paced Moniteau with 10 points while Victoria Pry and Davina Pry both scored eight.

Luke Lawson led a trio of Seneca Valley players scoring in double figures, draining 14 points in the Raiders' 52-41 win over South Fayette at the Canon-McMillan Tip-Off Tournament.

Bowling
Mackensie Livingston's 617 series led Freeport's girls to a 7-0 shutout of St. Joseph. The effort included singles of 236 and 234 while Julia Cummings added a 214.
Freeport's boys received a 681 series from Colin Cummings — including singles of 217, 217 and 247 — in a 7-0 win over St. Joseph.
The 'Jackets also featured Dylan Granata and Ben Perka, who managed singles of 204 and 191, respectively.
Hockey
Marcus Trask's hat trick lifted Freeport to a 3-2 victory over Westmont Hilltop Thursday.
Assists went to Nick Dobransky, Sebastian Cordier and Jake Suwan.
Tyler Lang earned his third win of the season in net, making 20 saves.
