Butler runners take 1st, 2nd
Butler's Drew Griffith and CJ Singleton placed first and second overall, respectively, at Thursday's Tri-State cross country meet at California (Pa.) University.
Griffith finished in 16 minutes, 13 seconds. Singleton was right behind him at 16:22.
Butler placed fifth out of 21 teams in the boys standings.
Jen Cichra paced Butler's girls to a 6th-place finish out of 20 teams after she finished 10th (20:08).
Emma Davis dropped 23 kills and Riley Might had 34 digs as Seneca Valley survived Butler's rally in a 3-2 win over the Golden Tornado.Cassidy Matteo contributed 20 assists and Mandy Altsman 18 assists for SV, which won by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 17-25, 21-25 and 15-11.With the victory, the playoff-bound Raiders (6-6) kept Butler (4-7) from making the postseason.The Tornado received 21 kills and 16 digs from Taylor Welter, five aces and 11 digs from Maisy Gibson and 21 digs courtesy of Megan Penrod.Ava Plunkard added four kills and 13 digs for Butler.A-C Valley 3, Union 0 — The Falcons (9-6) defeated the Damsels by scores of 25-13, 26-24 and 25-17.Meah Ielase continued her strong season with 10 kills and 10 digs and teammate Paige Klingler added five aces and 13 digs.Lexi Ruckdeschel chipped in seven kills and four blocks, Mackenzie Parks 11 digs and Jenna Stefanacci 14 assists.Freeport 3, Armstrong 0 — The Yellowjackets locked up their 17th straight section championship by the scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-22.Erica Lampus had 15 kills, 6 blocks, and 11 service points. Grace Beach had 16 service points and 15 assists and Ava Soilis 22 digs.
Knoch capped off its season Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime triumph at Riverside. Laurel Hull struck first in the second half before Emma Slusser iced the game in the extra frame. Bella Oskin assisted on both markers. The Knights round out their schedule with a 5-11 overall record.
