CDC modifies guidance for fully vaccinated people

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can participate in some outdoor activities without wearing a face mask, and recommended that everybody get vaccinated.

Fully vaccinated people should consider how COVID-19 is spreading in their community, the number of people participating in the activity and the location of the activity when deciding whether to wear a mask. Outdoor visits and activities are safer than indoor activities, the CDC said.

The CDC said people fully vaccinated can walk, run, bike, attend gatherings and dine at outdoor restaurants without a mask, but should wear one at large outdoor events such as concerts, parades and sports events. However, fully vaccinated people should wear masks at indoor events and activities.

The CDC guidance comes as the number of cases of COVID-19 and deaths remain high locally and across Pennsylvania. Twenty-six new cases in the county and 3,333 new cases statewide increase the totals to 10,555 and 1,139,390, respectively, since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. About 27,568 of the cases in the state are among health care workers.

Two new deaths in the county and 84 across the state bring the totals to 403 and 26,072, respectively. There are 2,495 people hospitalized with COVID-19, including 517 people in intensive care. The 14-day average number of people hospitalized per day is increasing, but is about 3,400 lower than it was at the peak of the virus in December 2020 and below what it was at the height of the spring peak in May 2020. In licensed nursing and personal care homes, 70,516 residents and 14,734 employees have COVID-19. Of the deaths in the state, 13,089 have been residents of nursing or personal care facilities.

The health department also reported that 3,239,152 people are fully vaccinated and about 100,000 people are getting vaccinated every day. A total of 8,130,899 doses have been administered, including 5,164,734 first and single doses and 2,966,165 second doses. In the county, 21,617 people have been partially vaccinated and 61,186 people are fully vaccinated.
