Stadium authority names new nonprofit foundation

Entity will seek funds, grants

The Butler Recreation Cultural Foundation is the name given to the nonprofit organization the Butler Parks, Recreation, Grounds and Facilities Authority is trying to form to raise money and apply for grants.

Authority board members unanimously approved the name Monday.

Stadium manager Dean Selfridge said he and board member Dustin Orwig filled out as much of the state application for creating the foundation as they could on their own. He said the solicitor will be needed to complete the application.

The foundation could raise money for improvements at Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park and authority activities outside of the stadium.

In other business, Selfridge said the Pullman Park Hall of Fame committee has been formed. The five members are Bob Cupp, Dan Cunningham, Jay Miranda, Rachelle Haberberger and Michele Stockard.

The application for induction into the hall has been completed and the committee will meet to create bylaws, he said.

The first round of inductees will be announced at the Butler BlueSox 2021 home opener in May.

Selfridge said he is working on starting an authority-run youth baseball league and having the authority join the Challengers League for youth with special needs for the 2021 season.

In preparation for next season, Orwig said sponsors are needed and the concession stand has to be more profitable.

He suggested offering sponsorships for specific items in the stadium.

Selfridge said the sponsors can be recognized during ball games.

Orwig said the authority should meet with the Butler Hot Dog Shoppe, which runs the concession stand, to review the menu and cost of products to reduce costs.

Selfridge said the menu was one of the main complaints of fans in a survey conducted by Slippery Rock University students.

He also said the authority has four or five interns from SRU and Clarion University working on marketing, administration and events.
