Busy Madison excelling on volleyball court

SLIPPERY ROCK — Tiffany Madison's schedule is full.

When she's not cheerleading, she's a dancer in the band.

When she's not dancing in the band, she's jumping, spiking, diving, digging and serving for the Slippery Rock High volleyball team.

“Tiff is one of the busiest kids I've ever met,” said Slippery Rock volleyball coach Danielle Busi, chuckling. “She's doing three things right now, going to three different practices and games. I don't know how she has the time.”

Neither does Madison.

“I try,” she said, laughing. “I love all three equally.”

Madison has found unique ways to make time to hone her many crafts.

“Even while in class, I'll practice routines at my desk,” she said. “I'll picture the dance moves and practice them in my head.”

Madison is grateful that everyone has been so accommodating of her hectic schedule.

“It makes me feel good,” she said. “They are all trying to help me so much and not forcing me to choose one over another.”

Despite her focus being split three ways this fall, Madison has been able to excel in everything she does.

On the volleyball court, Madison is one of the most dangerous hitters in District 10.

At 5-foot-11 and with good jumping ability, Madison is an imposing force.

“She's definitely our strongest attacker,” Busi said. “This year we are definitely relying on her a lot.”

Madison has accepted that challenge.

During the offseason, which was a challenging one because of the COVID-19 restrictions, Madison worked to improve her jumping ability and accuracy with her attacks. She also worked on her blocking.

“I feel like I'm jumping higher than I did before,” Madison said.

That's equated to the court, where Madison is averaging 12.5 kills per match.

Madison, though, stresses that her numbers are a result of the talent around her.

Setter Virginia Recchia is averaging 23 assists per match.

“It makes me feel happy to get a good pass and turn that into a point for them and our team,” Madison said.

She's also worked hard on the mental part of the game.

“I just try to go out and play smart and not get myself down if something goes wrong,” Madison said. “I know a lot of girls who let things get into their heads a lot. I've been trying to get better at that. I'm still working on it. If you hit the first ball out, you can get the next one. No one is perfect.”
