Sack Attack
JACKSON TWP — Baldwin had to work overtime to grab a lead Saturday at Seneca Valley.
The Highlanders lost it — and the game — on the next play.
The Raiders' Nolan Dworek trumped Fletcher Hindman's 24-yard field goal by scampering 10 yards for the winning touchdown on Seneca Valley's first offensive snap in overtime. The play handed SV a 19-16 Homecoming victory at NexTier Stadium.
“Our offense didn't win us this game. Our defense and special teams won this game today,” SV coach Ron Butschle said.
The Raiders sacked Baldwin quarterback Colton Brain nine times on the day. Defensive end Josh Miller nailed him for a 5-yard loss on first down from the SV 10-yard line in overtime. Brain was then dropped for a 40-yard loss by Aidan O'Shea, setting up the field goal attempt.
Miller was in on four of his team's sacks.
“This (defensive) type of my game is my favorite,” Miller said. “It comes down to who wants it more.”
“Josh's motor never stops,” Butschle said.
Connor Lyczek retured the opening kickoff 90 yards for a Raider touchdown. Dworek scored on a 30-yard run late in the first quarter and Seneca Valley had a 13-0 lead.
Dworek had 18 carries for 115 yards, but Seneca Valley's offense struggled for consistency all day. The Raiders netted only 148 yards of offense and seven first downs. SV turned the ball over four times as well.
“The way the game started out ... it turned into something we didn't expect,” Lyczek said.
Baldwin's Dorien Ford — a University of Pittsburgh recruit — recovered a Raider fumble at the SV 9-yard line to set up the Highlanders' first score. Brain found Connor Lavelle for a 6-yard scoring pass with 8:47 left in the first half.
Baldwin (2-2) drove to Seneca Valley's 11-yard line midway through the fourth period. Lyczek intercepted a Brain pass to snuff out the threat.
It was Lyczek's second theft of the contest.
“Connor was the player of the game for us,” Butschle said. “He was outstanding in a lot of ways.
“A special teams touchdown is always big. It doesn't matter at what point in the game it occurs.”
Lyczek said that “whenever I see the ball go up, I feel like I have to make it mine.”
Baldwin wasn't done yet. On 2nd-and-4 from the Highlanders' 40, Brain rolled right while under heavy pressure. He found C.J. Robbins deep down the right sideline for a 54-yard completion, setting up Brain's 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game with 1:35 left.
The Highlanders' Keith Mincin intercepted a deflected pass and Baldwin had a chance to win the game in regulation. Hindman's 42-yard field goal attempt was well short as time expired.
“We lost the turnover battle and took a bunch of penalties,” Butschle said. “Baldwin came out here and fought hard. We gutted this one out.
“Any win is a nice win.”
The Raiders were flagged seven times for 75 yards.
Brain wound up passing for 209 yards, including 166 in the second half.
“Colton is a tough kid,” Baldwin coach Tim Sweeney said. “He got knocked around today and kept getting up, looking to make plays. He made a big one for us late.
“Seneca Valley is a physical football team. But the strongest defense on the field today wore purple and white. I think Seneca Valley will attest to that.”
With the lost yardage on sacks factored in, Baldwin netted 28 yards rushing.
“I thought our defensive line was quicker and more athletic,” Miller said. “We were able to get a lot of penetration today.”
The Raiders remain at home this Friday, hosting Mt. Lebanon.
