BUTLER TWP — A volunteer firefighter from a neighboring department is credited with alerting a township homeowner and 911 about a fire on the second floor of his home Wednesday.

The firefighter from the Connoquenessing Township Volunteer Fire Department was driving past the home at 243 Evans City Road just before 2:30 p.m. and saw smoke coming from the second- floor eaves.

He stopped, alerted the homeowner, asked if anyone or any pets were inside and called 911, said Lou Zimmerman, chief of Connoquenessing VFD. He said the firefighter did not want to be identified and said he was just doing his job.

“I was in the garage. He said you have smoke coming out of the upstairs,” said homeowner Don Meier.

He said he hadn't been inside to see the damage, but firefighters told him the fire was contained to the bedroom and some ceiling tiles had to be removed to extinguish the flames.

“It doesn't sound all that bad,” Meier said.

He said he is preparing to remodel the home and doesn't have insurance.

Firefighters found and quickly contained the fire to the second floor bedroom, but there was smoke damage throughout the house, said Chris Switala, chief of the Butler Township Fire District.

“We had the fire under control within 15 minutes,” Switala said.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. Damages were estimated at $25,000.

Evans City Road was closed to traffic for about an hour while firefighters put out the fire.

No one was injured.

The American Red Cross was notified to assist Meier.

Township police, VA Butler Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service responded to the fire.
