A Butler woman is facing a felony aggravated assault charge after police said she stabbed a man in the chest following an argument Sunday morning.

Holly Ladean McElfresh, 26, is accused of stabbing a man and cutting a hole in her shirt to make it appear as if the man had attempted to stab her, according to charges filed Monday, Aug. 31, by Butler city police.

According to police, no defensive wounds or lacerations under the hole in her shirt were found on McElfresh following the incident on Pleasantview Avenue, which was reported around 4 a.m. Butler County Emergency Services dispatch told police the female caller reported stabbing a man then stabbing herself.

Police said they forced entry to the home and found the man and McElfresh in the kitchen. According to police, the man had substantial bleeding coming from the left side of his chest, while McElfresh had slight lacerations to her left forearm that appeared to be self-inflicted.

The man told police he and McElfresh were arguing when she pulled out a kitchen knife and cut a hole in her shirt to appear as if he attempted to stab her. He told police she then stabbed him and cut herself before police arrived.

According to city police Chief Robert O’Neill, the man was taken by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. He said he was in a stable condition. Dispatch recordings indicated one person was flown to Allegheny General Hospital just before 4:40 a.m.

Butler police, AHN LifeFlight, Butler Ambulance Service and Butler Bureau of Fire responded to the call.

McElfresh is being held at Butler County Prison with a $250,000 bail. Her preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled.
