Cause of man's death not declared

Authorities continue their investigation into last week's death of a 31-year-old Summit Township man whose body was found at a creek bed at the Butler Athletic Field on South Cliff Street in Butler.

No foul play is suspected in the death of Robert A. “Robbie” Smith II's death, according to Butler police. An autopsy Thursday did not immediately determine a cause of death, Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr said Monday.

Toxicology reports are pending and could take four to six weeks. Police said they found no drugs or contraband on or around Smith's body.

Investigators said Smith had an underlying medical issue that might be a contributing factor. They declined to elaborate.

The father of three, he went to the field Wednesday with his 3-year-old daughter. A city couple was preparing to walk their dogs around 9 p.m. when they reported finding the man unresponsive, police said.

The couple also found the young girl with the man. They helped the child and called 911. She was unharmed and subsequently reunited with her mother.

Police said there was no apparent injury or obvious trauma on the body, which was found face down on the bank of the creek.
