2 nabbed in stolen car

A man and woman were arrested after state police stopped them Saturday in a stolen car in Butler.

The suspects — Raymond N. Raine, 26, of Murrysville, Westmoreland County, and Maria N. Young, 25, of Butler — also were found with a forged check and drug contraband, police said.

District Judge Wayne Seibel arraigned Raine and Young on felony counts of receiving stolen property and forgery and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Raine is in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $5,000 bond. Young is free on $5,000 unsecured bond.

Police said they spotted the suspects in a 2004 Buick LeSabre, which had been reported stolen Friday out of Hopewell, Beaver County, about 12:50 a.m. on the 200 block of North Chestnut Street.

Following the traffic stop, they found a drug-smoking pipe and eight syringes in the vehicle, police said. They also turned up a man's checkbook, with one of the checks made out for “gas money.”

The arresting trooper noted that the check appeared to have been written and signed in the victim's name by one of the defendants.

“Raine admitted that a friend had given him the car,” according to charging documents, “and that he had been using the car for about a week.”
