Hiker rescued after fall

A 23-year-old Westmoreland County woman was rescued Monday afternoon after she fell about 20 feet near a popular vista for visitors at McConnells Mill State Park in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, authorities said.

A medical helicopter later flew the woman to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh with apparent leg and head injuries, said park manager Dustin Drew. Her condition was not available.

The Trafford woman was hiking with at least one other person in the area of Kildoo Falls near the covered bridge around 1 p.m. when she fell approximately 20 feet into Slippery Rock Creek, Drew said.

She was conscious when found and throughout the rescue, he noted.

Volunteer firefighters trained in rope rescue techniques reached the woman and used a Stokes basket to hoist her up a hillside with rock ledges. A landing zone was set up at the Kildoo parking lot, the park's main lot, for the helicopter.

Fire departments called in to assist included Slippery Rock, Scott, Perry and Wayne townships, all in Lawrence County. Noga Ambulance also assisted.

The Memorial Day rescue came as park rangers continued searching for a 38-year-old Crawford County man who fell into the creek May 2 while hiking on the Kildoo Trail with his fiancée, just downstream from the covered bridge.

Rangers have made daily search efforts for the man, Jeffery Hanby II of Meadville, since he fell into the water and was swept away.
