Summit student, 2 staff members test positive for coronavirus

Two staff members and one student at Summit Academy in Summit Township have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two weeks.

A staff member, who was not identified, last worked on May 10, according to a press release issued by the facility. The employee did not register a temperature over 99.9 degrees upon arriving for the day's shift. Another staff member last worked May 11, and also did not register a temperature upon arriving for the day's shift. Both employees informed the academy they tested positive on May 14.

On the morning of May 18, Summit received a positive test result for a student. Based on his current health status, it was determined he would be cared for in Summit's isolation unit.

The statement issued by the school Tuesday evening said that Summit has been consulting with an epidemiologist from the Pennsylvania Department of Health since Friday for additional mitigation, tracing and response efforts.

Based on recommendations from the epidemiologist, Summit identified and informed students and staff members who had significant contact with individuals who tested positive for the virus.

Summit also implemented quarantine and isolation protocols for students to be used on an as needed basis to mitigate further spread of the virus at the school. Medical staff are monitoring students' health daily.

Additionally, Summit increased the aggressive sanitizing and safety protocols included in its COVID-19 response plan, which was developed and implemented over the past two months.
