Put this idle time to good use

Rev. Mary Kitchen

It seems like a long time since this present crisis began.

For many weeks we have been confined to our homes. Our usual routines are disrupted.

How long will this last? This is a question that is on all our minds.

When can we return to our jobs, community centers, churches and synagogues?

We hope and pray that our lives can soon return to normal. But until that time, this present crisis presents a challenge to us.

This crisis invites us to think more deeply about the meaning of each day.

In these strange and unusual days, we are given the gift of time — time to think, time to reflect, time to pray.

How can I use this day? What will I choose to do today to bring meaning and purpose to my life?

It is all too easy to waste our days in worry, fear or boredom. But each day presents the opportunity for new growth and new understanding.

This time of crisis can also be a time of beginnings. Here are a few suggestions:

Begin to read that book that has been waiting for you on the shelf. Turn off the television and read the Bible or the book of your religious tradition.

Call a friend or relative and renew a relationship.

Spend time in prayer.

The God who loves you is waiting to talk with you.

Jesus said, “Seek first the Kingdom of God, and all these things will be added to you.”

- Find a way to help someone else.

- Send a card to someone who lives alone.

- Take extra food to someone who needs it.

When this crisis ends, may we discover that new life has sprung up within us.

God can use all things for good. As the trees around us are bursting into life, God's Spirit is working within us.

Jesus said, “Behold, I am making all things new.”

So may it be.

The Rev. Mary Kitchen is the pastor of both North Butler Presbyterian Church in Chicora and the East Butler Presbyterian Church in East Butler.
