County lists park project grants
A dozen municipalities will receive county grants for park renovation this year.
Lance Welliver, the county director of parks and recreation, announced the grants at Wednesday’s Butler County commissioners meeting.
Each municipality will receive $7,500 in county funds, with the exception of Jefferson Township, which will receive $7,321.
All municipalities must also contribute a share of funds toward their projects to receive the grants.
Welliver said he received 24 applications this year.
The biggest project on the list will take place in Harrisville, where a large handicap-accessible walking trail and restrooms will be installed in the community park.
The total cost for the project is $217,750, but borough council will use two other grants to provide their $210,250 in matching funds.
Adams Township will see the purchase and installation of a destination playground at the township park to the tune of $130,000. The township will pay almost $122,500 toward the project.
Penn Township will install a new playground surface in Renfrew damaged due to flooding. The project will also include new drainage and wheelchair access to the parking area and basketball court.
Total cost is $130,150. Penn Township will pay more than $122,600 in its share.
While some are higher, many other project costs hovered near the $10,00.
Other municipalities that will receive the grant are Buffalo Township, Butler Township, Butler, Chicora, Cranberry Township, Evans City, Harmony and Slippery Rock.
Welliver also received approval for his plan to document donations his department receives for memorial park benches, trees, bricks and structures.
