State official says workers eligible for unemployment

If COVID-19 affects their jobs

The state's Department of Labor and Industry announced Monday that workers affected by the ongoing novel coronavirus 2019 pandemic will be eligible for unemployment insurance.

Workers will be eligible if their employer closes, goes out of business or reduces their hours, or if the employee has been told not to work, told to quarantine or lives in a county under government mitigation efforts.

The list of eligible workers was not updated following Gov. Tom Wolf's 2 p.m. address, in which he announced statewide shutdowns for nonessential businesses, but said he plans not to enforce the shutdowns.

“As Pennsylvania and the nation implement mitigation efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, it is important to relieve some of the financial pressures our workers are facing, so they can focus on remaining healthy and safe,” Labor and Industry Secretary Jerry Oleksiak said in a statement Monday.

Workers applying for unemployment can do so online.

DLI also said Monday that workers who might have been exposed to COVID-19 at their workplace could be eligible for workers' compensation benefits through two different pathways: a worker filing a “disease-as-injury” claim is required to provide evidence they were exposed in the workplace, while one filing an “occupational disease” claim must show COVID-19 occurs more in their specific occupation than in the general population.
