Gov. Wolf orders shutdown

Restaurants, bars closed except takeout

Effective at midnight Monday, all nonessential businesses in the state are to close, Gov. Tom Wolf said during a news conference.

Wolf also ordered all bars and restaurants, except for takeout, closed.

Wolf said the decision, influenced by the novel coronavirus 2019 pandemic, could last about two weeks. He said the state will continue to re-evaluate the situation and lift the mitigation as soon as possible.

“Essential services include municipal services, such as trash collection, grocery stores and medical facilities, and are to remain open,” Wolf said.

Last week, Wolf imposed similar restrictions in Montgomery County, initially labeled as the epicenter of coronavirus cases in the state.

As of 2 p.m. Monday, there were no reported cases of the virus in the county, according to a Butler Memorial Hospital spokesperson.

In a later news release, Wolf's administration said it supports local law enforcement, permitting entities and local officials to enforce the mitigation if needed.

“We're not sending out state police or the National Guard to enforce this,” Wolf said. “We need to work together to do this, each and every one of us.”

According to state Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine as of Monday morning, 76 Pennsylvanians have tested positive for coronavirus.

“All are in isolation at home or are being treated in a hospital,” she said.

Levine said testing continues to increase as more commercial labs open. She said as of Monday morning, 670 patients statewide tested negative.

Dr. Sharon Watkins, director of the State Bureau of Epidemiology, gave some newly restructured advice about how people should evaluate their medical needs in terms of the coronavirus.

She said people with mild symptoms should stay home. If they feel worse, they should contact their doctor.

Watkins said people with severe symptoms, such as a fever over 100, shortness of breath or cough, should also contact their health care provider.

“This is how we're determining if a patient should be tested,” she said.

Wolf's administration continues to emphasis social distancing in addition to normal hygiene practices that could prevent the spread of the virus.

Both the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state Department of Health have online resources to keep the public informed on updates and preventive advice.

Wolf recommended calling or video-calling family and friends while remaining at home as much as possible.

“I know for all of us the next few weeks will be challenging,” Wolf said. “Stay calm, stay safe, stay home.”
