Diocese cancels all Masses

The Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh announced Sunday evening that all weekday and Sunday Masses have been canceled.

A statement released by the diocese cited the increasing number of updates and concerns related to the novel coronavirus 2019 as its reasoning for the measure, which takes effect Monday and will remain in effect until further notice.

The news release issued by the diocese further reported that arrangements are being made to live stream more Masses in the coming days.

“Although in many ways it saddens me to make this decision, given the best advice from health experts on federal, state, and local levels, I feel it is a necessary one at this time. I’m counting on the understanding and cooperation of all in the Diocese of Pittsburgh as we pray for each other,” Bishop David Zubik said in the release.

Zubik is calling for a special day of prayer in the Diocese of Pittsburgh on March 25, for the Feast of the Annunciation. More information will be forthcoming about the event.

Diocese officials are expected to release additional directives Monday about the celebration of the sacraments of baptism, confession, confirmation, anointing of the sick, funerals and weddings.
