Boy, 15, flown to hospital after dirt bike accident
A 15-year-old boy was injured Sunday afternoon while riding a motorcycle at the Switchback Raceway on Route 8 in Clay Township, authorities said.
The boy was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital with an apparent back injury. His condition was not known.
The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. as the boy, who is believed to be from the Pittsburgh area, was going over a set of jumps on his dirt bike, said Dan Bunyan, chief of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
The teenager reportedly lost control of the bike and landed on his back. He was wearing a helmet.
Bunyan said the boy was “conscious and alert” when emergency crews arrived. State police were not called, and the boy's name was not released.
A Butler Ambulance Service crew tended to the teen, immobilizing him using a cervical collar and a backboard. He could move his extremities,” Bunyan said.
The boy was taken by ambulance to the Unionville fire station at Route 8 and Mahood Road in Center Township where Unionville firefighters set up a landing zone for a LifeFlight helicopter.
The helicopter flew him to Children's Hospital.
