Teen charged in weekend armed robbery
A Butler teenager is behind bars on charges in a suspected weekend armed robbery at the Greenview Gardens apartment complex.
City police said 19-year-old Ian F. Zang stole prescription medication and clothing belonging to a 21-year-old man who was in an apartment about 12:40 a.m. Saturday. No one was injured.
Officers later arrested Zang and recovered the reported stolen items as well as a loaded revolver.
District Judge William Fullerton arraigned Zang on felony charges of robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment and theft. He is in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bond.
Police said the victim, who called 911 after the alleged holdup, told them that he was in the apartment with an ex-girlfriend when an unknown man came to the door brandishing a pistol.
The armed man, who had a red bandana covering his face, pointed the gun at him, the victim recounted, and demanded his clothing and other items that he had on him, police said.
While investigating, officers saw a man, later identified as Zang, run up a set of stairs in a common hallway. He was detained.
Under a rug next to him, police said, officers found a .22-caliber revolver that was loaded, a red bandana, clothing and medication with the victim's name on it.
Police subsequently spoke to the victim's former girlfriend, who lives at the apartment complex, and the 20-year-old woman corroborated his account of the incident.
Zang's preliminary hearing was not immediately scheduled. Online court records did not indicate if he has an attorney.
