Brush fires keep county volunteers busy Monday

Monday brought more than just warmer weather and sun as brush fires popped up throughout the county.

Around 11 a.m., a controlled burn turned into an uncontrolled brush fire on private property along Claytonia Road in Clay Township.

“People think because the ground is wet, the fires won't spread, but the ground on top is dry and with this nice day, it will spread,” said West Sunbury's assistant volunteer fire chief, Reid Campbell. “The wind has been strong all morning too, making it perfect weather for the flames to spread.”

By noon, the firefighters tamped down the area and brought the burn under control.

Campbell said the perimeter was contained.

Located more than 1,000 yards behind a home, firefighters with Onedia, Unionville and Marion Township helped douse the difficult-to-reach fire.

Campbell said all-terrain vehicles were used to carry water to the burning area as fire trucks couldn't navigate the conditions to get to the flames.

“All these guys set aside what they're doing to help. They're not getting paid,” Campbell said. “And I think that speaks volumes.”

Monday afternoon, Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department responded around 2:19 p.m. to a brush fire threatening a house trailer along Center Drive in Oakland Township.

Oneida Valley Chief Gary Wulff said the brush fire melted an area of siding and the skirting around the home.

He said the homeowner put out the fire herself with a garden hose.

“We put out the remaining brush fire, which was about a half-acre around it,” Wulff said.

Wulff said East Butler Ambulance Service evaluated the homeowner at the scene and determined she was OK.

Also assisting on the call were Lick Hill and Chicora fire departments.

Wulff said the Oakland Township call was their third brush fire incident in two days.

“(Burning) whenever it's damp as opposed to when it's dry would be a good idea,” he said.

A number of other brush fires broke out Monday afternoon, including one along Parker Pike in Parker Township, one on Church Road in West Liberty, one along Aderhold Road in Saxonburg and one on Burtner Road in Jefferson Township.
