Man gets jail time for DUI, fleeing
A man from Michigan was sentenced to jail Thursday for leading police on a brief vehicle and foot pursuit in Butler last year.
Bernard Bush, 36, pleaded guilty Feb. 11 to fleeing from police, a felony, and misdemeanors of driving under the influence, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest. Butler County Common Pleas Judge William Shaffer sentenced Bush to a total of six months to a year in jail followed by a year of probation. Bush must also pay a $1,000 fine. He received 172 hours in credit for time already served.
Bush has been in Butler County Prison since Sept. 18 after police arrested him.
According to state troopers that day, they spotted a Kia Forte pulling out of a store parking lot on West Jefferson Street without signaling. The troopers went to stop Bush on North Chestnut Street, but he instead sped off. The car ended on the east side of the road on the sidewalk. Bush got out and ran, jumping over a fence in back of the Family Video store.
A trooper fired his Taser, dropping Bush to the ground.
“Bush began to roll around on the ground to dislodge the prongs from the (Taser),” documents said. The maneuver apparently worked, and he allegedly began running away again, this time on West Cunningham Street.
Bush got away, but Butler police officers found him around 2:20 a.m. at a home on the 100 block of North Chestnut Street.
“Bush jumped out a second-story window in an attempt to flee,” documents said, “but was taken into custody.”
