Middlesex supervisors OK officer training

MIDDLESEX TWP — Supervisors made short work in approving one item at a work session Wednesday afternoon.

They approved sending an officer to police training May 19 at the Butler County Staff Development Center. Municipal officers can attend the “armorers course” for $250.

“To do the cleaning of the Glocks,” said Travis Cavanaugh, township manager.

The motion initially was to send township officer Conrad Pfeifer to the training, which also would count as 24 hours toward firearms instructor work.

Pfeifer also is certified in SWAT, Taser and beanbag training.

Supervisor Vice Chairman Donald Marshall said he wants another officer go through the class. He said it would be good for police certifications to be shared.

“God forbid, if something happens to Conrad, we're going to have no qualifications,” Marshall said. “I'd just hate to see one of our only officers have all the qualifications.”

“We should mix it up a little bit,” said Supervisor Robert Brash. “It makes sense.”

Township solicitor Michael Hnath suggested supervisors approve “an officer” to attend the training. This way, the department could send anyone.

If no one else is available to attend the May 19 training, Pfeifer still can go.

Brash and Marshall approved the motion. Chairman Michael Spreng was absent.
