Ex-boyfriend pleads guilty to strangling, simple assault
A Worth Township man will be sentenced in April to a term of probation after pleading guilty Wednesday to strangling his ex-girlfriend and slamming her head against a wooden post in Slippery Rock.
Harold E. McGhee, 55, was arraigned in August on a felony charge of strangulation and lesser charges of simple assault and harassment. On Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to simple assault in exchange for prosecutors dropping the other charges.
The 37-year-old Lawrence County woman told police she was leaving North Country Brewing when she saw McGhee, who she described as an ex-boyfriend, according to charging documents.
She said he allegedly came running toward her and screamed at her. She told authorities that McGhee grabbed her by the neck and struck her head on the wooden post on the ramp at the entrance of the business, police said.
The woman told police McGhee strangled her to the point she believed she passed out. Investigators noted red marks around her throat and chest area and a large bump on the back of her head.
McGhee was later arrested at his home.
