Drivers in chain-reaction crash ID'd

Butler police have released the names of the drivers in a multivehicle, chain-reaction crash Wednesday morning on South Main Street that injured two people.

Ricky A. Houk, 59, of Butler and John P. Campbell, 48, of Summit Township were both taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with suspected serious and minor injuries, respectively, according to a police report. Their conditions were not known Thursday.

The wreck occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m., police said, when a tractor-trailer driven by Justin D. Phillips, 30, of Butler made a left turn from East Jefferson Street onto South Main Street, where several vehicles were stopped for traffic in the southbound lane.

Phillips was unable to stop in time and rear-ended a Chevrolet Malibu that Houk was driving. The car was pushed into the back of a utility truck that Campbell was driving.

In turn, police said, the utility truck was pushed into the rear of a sport utility vehicle driven by Frederick C. Carnahan, 66, of Butler, and the SUV was pushed into the back of a car driven by Alexis D. Flick, 19, of Rimersburg, Clarion County.

Police said Houk told officers he had neck and shoulder pain and Campbell reported having neck pain following the crash. None of the other drivers was injured.

City officers directed traffic at the intersection of South Main and East Jefferson streets until a wrecker arrived and towed away the car, which sustained severe rear-end damage.

The rig and utility truck sustained moderate damage and the SUV and other car had minor damage.

Police said Phillips was cited for careless driving and following too closely to another vehicle.
