BUTLER TWP — The female driver and passenger of a sport-utility vehicle were conscious and alert after the vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer along Route 422 in the township Friday evening.

Township police said the SUV was attempting to turn from Greenwood Road on to Route 422 East when it collided with the tractor trailer shortly after 7 p.m.

The driver and passenger of the SUV were taken by ambulance to an area hospital. Police did not have a report on their conditions, but said they were conscious, alert and able to talk to emergency responders after the accident. The passenger of the SUV was believed to be elderly, police said.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The accident is under investigation, police said.

The Butler Township Volunteer Fire District closed Greenwood Road and the eastbound lane of Route 422 to traffic while police examined the wreckage and tow trucks removed the vehicles.
