PA, WPIAL football Week 2 final scores: Recaps, highlights, more from Butler, Knoch and all the rest

Butler's Nicco Baggetta gets away from a Shaler defender in a season-opening football game Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at Butler High School's Art Bernardi Stadium. Andrew Jackson/Butler Eagle

Butler County teams largely stayed close to home last week and even made visits to one another.

This week? Not so much. Nine teams are on tap tonight, with the majority of them on the road. But we’ve got you covered.

Eagle reporters will be at five games tonight — Taylor Allderdice at Butler (Brendan Howe), Keystone at Karns City (Derek Pyda), McGuffey at Knoch (John Enrietto), Ellwood City at Freeport (William Pitts) and Elizabeth Forward at North Catholic (Scott Giebel). Follow this page for updates and scores from those games and all the rest throughout the night. Eagle sports editor Jake Merda Adams will post updates and highlights along with scores from kickoff to the final whistle.

And after the action is over, you can find all our game coverage and photos from the field.

North Catholic vs Elizabeth Forward moved

An important scheduling note for tonight. North Catholic’s home game against Elizabeth Forward has been moved to Mars Athletic Complex. The Trojans (0-1) were set to host at J.C. Stone Field, but Thursday’s severe storms across Western Pennsylvania have forced the game to move. The Planets are on the road tonight against Aliquippa.

Live updates: Scoring plays, news and highlights from Butler County football Week 2 games

Follow along here for updates and highlights from tonight’s games, starting around kickoff at 7 p.m.

10:10: Mars falls to 0-2 ... that’s it for Week 2’s Friday night slate

Another tough outting for the Planets under first-year coach Zachary Benedek. They’ve been in both games much of the way but haven’t been able to finish the job. Aliquippa holds on 42-27.

9:52: Rockets get first win of Steve Monteleone Era

And what an emphatic win it was. Slippery Rock routed Conneaut 57-21. Rockets improve to 1-1.

9:49: Thompson seals it for Elizabeth Forward

Man, tough loss for the Trojans, who fall to 0-2. Rocco Thompson’s 3-yard run on third-and-goal reaches the end zone (his fourth of the night), and Liz Forward beats North Catholic 34-28 in double overtime.

9:46: North Catholic stopped in OT2

The Trojans went backwards from first-and-goal at the 10, only to see the field goal attempt doink off the upright. Liz Forward has the ball and can win it here. Third-and-goal from the 3.

9:38: Big night for Jake Kollinger continues with third TD

That’ll stamp this one for the Tornado. Butler RB Kollinger scores for the third time tonight, and the home team leads 36-0 late.

9:36: Liz Forward goes up in first OT, North Catholic responds

Rocco Thompson runs it in again for Elizabeth Forward to make it 28-21 over North Catholic. The Trojans have one 10-yard drive to try to tie it.

And as I’m typing that, they do. Nate Swisher. First down and goal, 10 yards, end zone.

9:31: Knoch improves to 2-0 with dramatic win

An interception on the final play seals it, and the Knights are 2-0 to start the season, a huge improvement from last year already. More to come from John Enrietto on this one.

And William Pitts will have a recap from Freeport’s 45-7 rout of Ellwood City in a bit.

9:27: North Catholic ties it up, while blowouts about to end up north

Will Toprani lunges in from a yard out, and North Catholic has tied it 21-21 to force overtime. This has been a good one.

Meanwhile, up north Central Clarion is blowing out Union/A-C Valley 50-0 in the fourth, and Slippery Rock is thumping Conneaut 50-14 in a sizable upset.

9:22: Anotha one for Jake Kollinger

Butler’s gonna win this one easily. Running back Jake Kollinger gets his second TD of the night, running it in from 10 yards out to make it 29-0.

9:19: Knoch takes make the lead late

Max Wiley leads the scoring the Knights need. He plunges in from a yard out, and with 1:51 left to play it’s Knoch 21-20 over Ellwood City. Defense now has to make a big stand.

9:11: Karns City trips the running clock

Another goal-line run, this time off the right end, and the Gremlins are going to be able to run this game out quickly, with seven minutes left up 49-14.

9:09: Knoch trails for first time

The Knights have led all season ... until now. A huge 98-yard TD run by Dennis Furmanek puts McGuffey up 20-14 with 4:49 minutes left to play. Crunch time for Max Wiley & Co.

9:01: Mars can’t sustain drives against Quips

It’s been at least two interceptions thrown by the Planets, from what I’ve seen tonight. Mars is moving the ball but just can’t finish the job. Aliquippa is up by multiple scores.

8:52: First-half statistical highlights from Butler

Per Brendan Howe, here’s a late (my fault) look at the Tornado’s first-half stats:

QB Nicco Baggetta: 2-3, 16 yds.; 11 car., 99 yds., TD

RB Jacob Kollinger: 8 car., 69 yds., TD

WR Deacon Simko: 2 rec., 9 yds.; 2 car., 3 yds., TD

8:43: Third quarter under way, here’s the latest

As I’m typing this, Cole Johnston keeps it himself around the left end to put Karns City up 42-14. Freeport’s lead has ballooned to 38-0 (and I jinxed it right away with Ellwood City returning a pick-six for the Wolverines’ first TD of the year). And in Mars, Elizabeth Forward is back ahead of North Catholic 21-14 after another Rocco Thompson TD, this one a 3-yard rush.

PS: That pick was ruled down after I typed this, but the Wolverines scored on a long run shortly after. So different plan, same result.

8:28: Most impressive scores so far

I’ll give that to Butler, Slippery Rock and Freeport.

The Tornado started slow last week before mounting a big comeback. To pitch a halftime shutout right now is a sign of growth in just seven days.

For Slippery Rock, not a one of us picked the Rockets to beat Conneaut, and while this team has to prove it can hold on in the second half, being up 36-14 and pouring it on late in the first half bodes well to get to 1-1.

And Freeport’s capitalized on Ellwood City’s punting blunders (three of them!), but this is still a bigger lead than I anticipated.

8:13: Knoch trying to make it 2-0

Max Wiley is 10 of 12 for 151 yards and a touchdown for the Knights, who lead 14-6 at halftime over McGuffey. Not nearly has high-scoring as last week, but Knoch is on its way to a 2-0 start.

8:05: Slippery Rock looking good in first half

The Rockets had a habit of getting off to fast starts last year, only to fade in the second half of games. Can they defy that trend this year after taking a 22-7 lead on Conneaut on John Petras’ 17-yard scoring scramble? Time to see. Slippery Rock (0-1) looking for its first win under Steve Monteleone.

8:00: Kollinger punches another in for Butler to extend lead

Jake Kollinger runs in from 17 yards out to give the Golden Tornado a 22-0 lead late in the second quarter. Much better start to the game for Butler than last week, when it trailed before having to make a heroic comeback in the fourth quarter.

7:56: Back to Freeport, where offense finally gets to be involved

Danny King throws a short TD pass to Chace Flynn, and look at that Yellowjackets offense getting to have some fun finally. It’s 28-0 now. King rolled right, then looked back left to hit Flynn on a jump ball into the back of the end zone.

Right around that time, Karns City’s Cole Johnston (read our feature on him HERE) breaks a 50-yard run off to put the Gremlins up 34-7.

7:47: Deacon Simko sweeps his way into the end zone, extending Butler lead

The talented receiver takes a jet sweep a short distance for a score, and the Tornado extend their lead to 15-0.

7:40: Unreal ... another bad punt leads to Freeport points (and Butler gets a turnover)

I’ve never seen anything like this. A punt has been blocked, a bad snap was recovered in the end zone and now a third was also a bad snap recovered by Freeport on the 1, leading directly to a touchdown on a run by Braydon Pomaybo. That’s 21-0 Yellowjackets, all on special teams blunders.

Butler is trying to turn a turnover into more points. QB Nicco Baggetta, who I believe forced or recovered the turnover on defense, just ran 45 yards deep into Allderdice territory. Butler leads 8-0 right now, mid-second.

7:35: North Catholic ties it up, Rouleau punches one in for Knoch

Ethan Rouleau re-extends the Knoch’s lead to 14-6 late in the first quarter over McGuffey on a 2-yard plunge. And future section foe NC has knotted things up with EF 7-7 on Will Waskiewicz’s 20-yard reception from Will Toprani.

7:32: Slippery Rock, Butler punch it in

I’m sorry, Tornado fans, I missed Tyler Friel’s call on the touchdown, but the Tornado lead Allderdice 8-0 in the second quarter. And that came shortly after Slippery Rock drove down the field and punched one in from about the 1-yard line, then converted a two-point conversion to go up 8-7 on Conneaut.

Update post script: It was a short TD run from Nicco Baggetta. Here’s the video:

7:24: Deja vu all over again for Freeport-Ellwood City

Two Wolverines punt attempts, two Yellowjackets touchdowns. This time, it’s a bad Wolverines snap in their own end zone that is recovered by a Freeport defender, and the visitors are up 14-0. The previous score came on a blocked punt return TD.

7:23: Moniteau trying to hold on, more from up north

Freeport has been in Ellwood City territory much of this first quarter, and a turnover inside the redzone just means the defense has the Wolverines pinned deep up 7-0. Up in District 9, St. Marys has been moving the ball methodically on Moniteau’s defense and is in the red zone again, also up 7-0.

Union/A-C Valley just gave up another touchdown and is trailing Central Clarion 15-0, and Conneaut got on the board a little bit ago to take a 7-0 lead over Slippery Rock.

7:20: North Catholic falls behind, Karns City extends lead

Liz Forward jumps ahead early at Mars Athletic Complex, 7-0 over North Catholic on this run by Rocco Thompson.

In other action, the Gremlins have forced two turnovers, I believe, then Cole Johnston floats a pretty ball on a fade route to the left corner of the end zone. And it’s 21-0 KC.

7:08: And Knoch goes up early, too, seeking 2-0 start

Roman DeFelice has been off to an electric start through about 4.25 quarters. He gives the Knights a 7-0 lead over McGuffey after a 72-yard touchdown catch, per John Enrietto.

7:04: Karns City, Freeport jump ahead early on big plays

I can’t replay to see how the Gremlins scored, but it took barely a minute to go up 7-0 over Keystone. And then shortly after, the Yellowjackets blocked a punt deep in Wolverines territory, recovered it around the 20 and returned it for a touchdown to go up 7-0 barely 1:30 into the game.

6:35 p.m.: North Catholic-Elizabeth Forward moved

The skies are settled, but the impact of Thursday night’s storms are still being felt. North Catholic’s home game at J.C. Stone Field against Elizabeth Forward was moved to Mars Athletic Complex. The Planets are on the road, so their field is available.

This comes one night after Seneca Valley’s road game against North Hills was canceled by the severe weather.
