Super Start Golden Tornado use big early run to rout Woodland Hills; Knoch falls to Chaney

Butler point guard Ethan Morton takes the ball to the hoop in the first quarter against Woodland Hills Friday. Morton had a triple double, the Golden Tornado led 43-5 at one point and rolled to a 73-33 victory in the season-opener.

BUTLER TWP — Runs are a part of basketball.

But this was more like an all-night jaunt.

Butler put together a 31-0 run in the first half — turning a 12-5 lead into a 43-5 laugher — while cruising to a 73-33 boys hoop victory over Woodland Hills in the first round of the Butler Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.

“When we come out with Devin (Carney) and Mattix (Clement) hitting like that, we can be hard to handle,” Butler coach Matt Clement said.

Mattix Clement drained treys on five of his first six shots. Carney hit four treys in the first half and scored 20 points in the first two quarters.

Ethan Morton wound up with a triple double of 17 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds despite playing less than three quarters.

“This may have been the most fun I've ever had playing basketball,” Morton said. “It has to be the best start we've ever gotten off to.

“A 31-0 run (with seven treys) can open up a lot of things. Everything just kept working for us.”

Woodland Hills clogged up the lane defensively, but was unable to get out and challenge the Golden Tornado's 3-point shooters.

Wolverines coach Matt Furjanic said that wasn't because of a lack of effort.

“Butler's passing was outstanding,” Furjanic said. “The defense we were in was capable of getting guys out there, but they were finding the open man with reverse passes so quickly ... We just didn't have time.

“As good as they (Butler) are on offense, they were every but as good on defense. They shut us down.”

Woodland Hills sank just two of 11 field goal attempts in the first eight minutes — turning the ball over five times — in falling behind 32-5 by quarter's end.

“We were getting a lot of steals at the top of the perimeter,” Clement said. “And our inside guys like Charlie Kreinbucher and Mason Montag were tying up their forwards, clearing out so Ethan could gobble up rebopunds.

“Ethan kept taking what their defense was giving us. He trusts our shooters to make shots and they did.”
