SR falls in OT in D-10 final

Rockets push Cathedral Prep to brink in loss

Just five minutes into the District 10 3A championship match Thursday night, the Slippery Rock High boys soccer team found itself down 1-0 to Cathedral Prep.

No matter. The Rockets didn't panic.

Six minutes later, Ian Balquist scored to knot the game at 1-1 and it stayed that way at Fort LeBoeuf's Carm Bonito Field until overtime.

Slippery Rock had a chance to win, but Ryan Davey's shot clanked off the cross bar.

A few minutes later, Danny Harrington found the net for Cathedral Prep for the winner as the Rockets' lost a heartbreaker, 2-1, in overtime.

“I'm proud of the boys tonight,” said Slippery Rock coach Kyle Hopkins. “There was wind and rain and they were ready to go from the kickoff. Even when we gave up the first goal, they didn't put their heads down.”

It was Slippery Rock's first loss since the third match of the season. The Rockets had won 16 straight before falling Thursday.

Only the champion in District 10 3A advances to the state playoffs, which begin next week — a hard pill for Slippery Rock to swallow.

“We fought hard and we had our chances,” Hopkins said. “Our defense — I give all the credit in the world to them. They played great.”

Cathedral Prep has now won 31 district championships.

Andrea Meals had 15 digs and Emily Wetzel added 14 digs, but A-C Valley saw its season come to a close in a 25-16, 25-20, 25-15 loss to Clarion in the District 9 Class A championship match. The Falcons finished the season at 17-3.
