A Butler County couple facing federal charges of embezzlement is vacationing in North Carolina, despite a federal prosecutor's objection, according to court documents.

Stephanie and Scott Roskovski were indicted in April by a grand jury on charges of embezzling $1.3 million from the Butler Health System and placed on pretrial supervision. In the indictment, prosecutors allege the couple conspired to defraud Butler Health System by submitting requests to Butler Memorial Hospital for business-related expenses used or planned to be used for personal expenditures, including “lavish vacations” and airline tickets. Charging documents reveal the Roskovskis are accused of spending $12,005 in February 2016 in Greensboro, N.C., “knowing that the funds were derived from a criminal offense.”

Pending a verdict in the case, one of the conditions of their supervision limited their travel to remaining in Pennsylvania, unless they were given permission to leave by a federal judge. The Roskovskis requested they be allowed to leave for two weeks — between July 2 and 13.

In the Roskovskis' petition to the court about traveling out of state, they argued the trip to North Carolina was “prepaid before the indictment in this case was returned.”

Assistant U.S. District Attorney Carolyn Bloch, who is prosecuting the case, objected to the second week of the vacation, according to court documents. But a spokeswoman for the federal prosecutor's office said Bloch's reason wasn't public information and declined further comment.

Judge Peter J. Phipps granted the couple's request to vacation in North Carolina during the first two weeks of July for a family celebration and to visit friends, according to court documents.

“In the absence of evidence that this two-week travel to North Carolina will cause flight or danger — and it appears Pretrial Services, at least, has no such evidence — we respectfully ask the court to approve the travel,” one of the lawyers for the Roskovskis, Michael Comber, wrote in the court filing.

On the first day of the Roskovskis' planned vacation, they appeared in an Allegheny County court for their son's drug charges. Jacob Scott Roskovski, 21, of Center Township waived to court 14 drug charges, half of which are felonies. The charges were the result of a raid on his Moon Township, Allegheny County, apartment in January.
