SAXONBURG — A woman accused of pointing a loaded handgun at her husband and hitting him with a baseball bat during a domestic dispute waived her preliminary hearing Wednesday on felony assault and other charges.

Rachel L. Mathews, 28, appeared before District Judge Sue Haggerty without an attorney, and eventually opted to forgo the hearing. She is currently free on $10,000 bail.

State police arrested Mathews at the couple's Blakely Road home in Jefferson Township following the June 12 altercation.

According to court documents, Mathews' husband reported she attacked him, punched him in the head, choked him with both of her hands and hit him in the right arm with a ball bat. The man eventually fled the house and called 911 from his mother's home.

Investigators said the victim had scratches on his neck and swelling and bruising on his arm.

“(He) also stated that (Mathews) retrieved a loaded Beretta .380 (caliber) pistol from their vehicle, and pointed it at his face during the altercation,” documents state.

Mathews allegedly admitted that she had gotten into a verbal and physical fracas with the victim. She also acknowledged getting a bat and pistol during the altercation, documents state, but she claimed she “did not strike or point the weapons at the victim.”

She is charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct.
