Patriotic Celebrations

Laine Palmer of Slippery Rock took first place in the four-corner stake competition Monday at the Big Butler Fair. On Thursday, the fair will celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks at dusk.
The following communities are offering fireworks:

Zambelli Fireworks of Warrendale will set off fireworks from the Michelle Krill Field at Historic Pullman Park at dusk Thursday.

New Life Church will have a free fireworks show Wednesday at 139 Knoch Road, Saxonburg. The church parking lot opens at 8 p.m. and the fireworks will commence at dusk. People should take their own chairs and blankets. There will also be a DJ, games and activities. There will be free bus shuttles from Knoch High School beginning at 6 p.m. Two shuttles will run continuously until 8 p.m., and then begin taking people back to their cars around 10:15 p.m.An off-site event at South Butler County School District's Primary School will be provided for people having trouble getting to the church property or who have children who like fireworks, but are afraid of loud noises. The site will also have music.

Mars' celebration will start with the inaugural Mars Independence Day 4K at 9 a.m. Thursday and 1K Run/Walk at 9:45 a.m. at the flying saucer on the corner of Grand Avenue. The celebration continues at 3:30 p.m. with a picnic-style meal, children's activities and live music. The parade begins at 5 p.m. from Beaver Street to Pittsburgh Street to Grand Avenue. The evening will cap off with fireworks at dusk.

The celebration in Zelienople will start with the Kampas Orthodontics Firecracker 5K starting at 8 a.m. Thursday from Zelienople Community Park through Zelienople and Harmony. A post-race breakfast and awards ceremony is scheduled for 9:15 a.m.The annual Independence Day parade begins at 11 a.m. and runs down Main Street and finishes in Community Park. Community Days celebration begins at 1 p.m. and will feature a roaming magician, bounce houses and a dunk tank. There will also be live music. The pool will be open until 6 p.m. and offer free admission.Fireworks in the park are scheduled to be set off at dusk.
