BUFFALO TWP — A man is accused of causing $750 in crop damage after police say he drove his pickup truck through several corn fields of a farm on Harvey Road last month.

Darius M. Obringer, 20, of Buffalo Township is charged with a second-degree misdemeanor count of agricultural vandalism and a summary count of traveling on cultivated land.

A family friend of the victim told police he and a buddy heard two pickups “racing” through a field and woods on the evening of June 22. The pair rode out on all-terrain vehicles to confront the drivers, according to court documents.

Both drivers got away but one of the witnesses got a good look at one of the trucks and provided a description of it to police. An officer recognized the truck as belonging to Obringer. Police later went to the defendant's home and asked him about the incident.

“Darius stated (he) did something very stupid and that he knew (police) would be coming to speak with him,” according to charging documents.

Police said Obringer admitted he and another person were in one of the victim's fields when he heard vehicles and people yelling to get off the property. Obringer told officers he and the other suspect got into their trucks and fled, speeding through the fields. He further acknowledged knowing that the fields were planted with corn.

When police asked him why he did so-called “doughnuts” in the fields, he replied that he “did not mean (to),” documents said, adding that he was “just trying to get out of the area.”

Obringer would not identify the person he was with, police said, because he did not want to “snitch” on the other person.

He faces a preliminary hearing July 31 at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.

Online court records did not list an attorney for him and he could not be reached for comment.
