A Butler judge agreed to reduce the bail of a jailed Lyndora man who is being held on more than a dozen charges after police said he tried to kill his girlfriend last year.

The reduction to a nominal fee will allow the man's release while he awaits trial.

Gage Carrozzi, 22, is accused of tracking his girlfriend, Jessica McFarland, on Dec. 17 to an apartment on Hansen Avenue, and firing seven rounds into the structure, according to Butler Township police.

The 23-year-old victim suffered a “grazing wound” to the side of her stomach, police said. She was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital and released.

Charges against Carrozzi were filed that night for attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault, discharge of firearm into an occupied structure, endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person. His bail was set at $300,000.

Wednesday's decision by Judge William Shaffer reduces that amount to a “nominal fee without a financial barrier,” according to Carrozzi's lawyer, public defender Joseph Smith.

Smith said that Carrozzi's continued detention in jail on an unaffordable bond was unconstitutional, and that under Pennsylvania's Rule 600 a defendant being held in pretrial incarceration must be released from jail after 180 days.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Zanella did not object to the release, but he asked Shaffer to put Carrozzi under electronic monitoring. Shaffer agreed to the addition, ordering Carrozzi not to contact the victim in the case.
