CHICORA — A teenage mother is charged with assaulting her toddler son, allegedly leaving the boy in need of hospital treatment for numerous injuries last year.

State police said Selina S. Campbell-McDowell, 18, of Grove City admitted to causing some of those injuries to her then 21-month-old son while she was caring for him.

Campbell-McDowell turned herself in to authorities Tuesday at the office of District Judge Lewis Stoughton in Chicora.

Stoughton arraigned her on a felony charge of aggravated assault and misdemeanor charges of simple assault and child endangerment. She is free on her own recognizance.

According to charging documents, police learned that the boy was taken by private vehicle Dec. 21 to Butler Memorial Hospital for injuries suffered in an apparent fall at a home in Fairview.

The hospital subsequently notified Butler County Children and Youth Services due to the toddler's injuries. The boy was placed in the care of another family member, police said.

CYS, meanwhile, requested that the child be taken to UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh for further examination of possible child abuse, documents said.

The toddler underwent exams Dec. 24 and Jan. 8, during which injuries were noted, including bruising to the outer right ear, right upper arm, left shoulder/bicep, chest, right shinbone and right groin area.

Additional injuries, police said, were scrapes on the nose and forehead.

Investigators interviewed Campbell-McDowell several times. At a May 6 interview, documents said, she acknowledged “causing some of the documented bruising while (the boy) was in her care.”

Those injuries were sustained when she “squeezed (him) too tightly.”

Campbell-McDowell did not have an attorney with her at arraignment and online court records did not list one. She could not be reached for comment.
