City OKs loan for store renovation

Butler City Council approved a $140,000 loan from the Butler Downtown revolving loan fund to Joseph and Jacquelyn Gray to purchase the former Friedman's Freshmarkets building at 122 West Brady St. and renovate it into office space.

Council members voted unanimously in favor of the loan Thursday.

Joseph Gray, the city's engineer, said he plans to renovate the front half of the building measuring 8,000 to 10,000 square feet into office space. Gateway Engineers will be the tenant.

“Gateway Engineers is going to move in there. They're expanding and they need more space,” Gray said Thursday evening after the council meeting.

He said his goal is to complete the renovations so Gateway can move in by January, but he doesn't have plans yet for the other half of the building.

“Back half — no plans yet,” Gray said.
