Airport upgrades receive grant funding

The two Butler County airports will receive state grant money to go toward various infrastructure upgrades, according to a news release from Gov. Tom Wolf's office.

Pittsburgh-Butler Regional Airport in Penn Township will receive $90,000 for the design and engineering phase of taxiway rehabilitation and the extension of a hangar access road, both on the south side of the airport, airport manager Ike Kelly said.

He said the taxiways will be rebuilt and the existing small road that allows pilots to access their rental hangars will be extended and improved.

The total estimated cost of the two projects is $720,000, including $120,000 for design and $600,000 for construction, Kelly said.

He said the airport authority has the money budgeted for the projects, but he expects more help may be on the way.

“We hope to receive funding for construction in 2019, but it depends on the funding available,” he said.

The airport authority hopes to have the projects completed by fall 2019.

The Butler Farm Show Airport in Butler Township received $37,000 for airfield maintenance equipment and $45,000 to trim and remove trees that affect the approach to the runway.
