No water service closes A-C Valley

FOXBURG, Clarion County — The Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District canceled classes for a second consecutive day Friday due to a water line leak that left school buildings without water.

Superintendent David McDeavitt said the district maintenance director called him at 6:15 a.m. Thursday and reported low water pressure. A half-hour later there was no water pressure.

“At 6:45 a.m. we lost all water pressure. We had none at all,” McDeavitt said.

He decided to dismiss classes, but buses loaded with students were already on their way to the schools.

Elementary school staff contacted all elementary students parents to make sure someone was going to be home when the students were returned.

“They worked feverishly to get everything done,” McDeavitt said.

The students were brought into the schools, fed breakfast, put back on their buses and returned home, he said.

He said the Foxburg Water and Sewer Authority notified him about a water leak Wednesday, but the schools did not have any problems with their water service that day.

All district buildings will be closed Friday and the weekend because of concerns about water contamination, he said.

Boil water advisory

The Foxburg Water and Sewer Authority has issued a boil water advisory lasting at least until Friday evening to area residents due to a pump failure and at least one water line leak.

A pump failed and one line leak was repaired, but crews suspect a second leak occurred, said Gwen Atwood, authority secretary-treasurer.

She said the state Department of Environmental Protection, which was notified about the problems, will inform the authority Friday morning about how long the advisory is to remain in effect.

The advisory was issued Thursday afternoon “due to a lack of positive water pressure,” Atwood said. “They found a leak. The pumps quit. They’re looking for a second possible leak.”
