BRADY TWP — Two riders were seriously injured Saturday evening when their motorcycle crashed on Route 528 about one mile from Route 8, authorities said.

Both victims were taken to Pittsburgh for hospital treatment of head and body injuries, according to emergency crews. Their conditions were not available Monday.

State police said James McKnight, 48, of Grove City was driving the cycle and Ruth Updegraff, 36, also of Grove City, was his passenger.

The pair was apparently traveling north on Route 528 between Staff and West Liberty roads about 6:50 p.m. when their Harley-Davidson wrecked. Investigators are reportedly looking into the possibly that the bike hit a deer.

The accident happened on a straight stretch of the road which was dry at the time, authorities said.

The man and woman were laying on the road when crews found them, said Nathan Wulff, chief of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department.

McKnight had a helmet on; Updegraff did not.

Both riders were in “pretty serious condition,” first responders said. The injuries, however, were not believed to be life threatening.

The cycle was damaged, and it was blocking the road.

Firefighters set up a landing zone for a LifeFlight medical helicopter at nearby Moraine Camplands on Staff Road. The copter flew Updegraff to an unknown Pittsburgh hospital.

McKnight was taken by Butler Ambulance Service to an unknown Pittsburgh hospital.

Police said their investigation continues. An accident report was not available Monday.
