BUTLER TWP — Township officials are concerned that the federal government's revised floodplain maps, which removed some properties in three areas of the municipality, aren't good enough.

Commissioners Monday night said they would consider adopting what's known as a flood hazard map, a mechanism by which the board can still impress upon property owners that they live in areas where flooding has been known to occur.

Officials said the action, if taken, would not change insurance rates or add insurance requirements to landowners. Rather, said township engineer Dan Deiseroth, the point was to avoid a false sense of security among homeowners.

“What we don't want people to do is think they don't have issues with their property just because they aren't on the FEMA map,” he said.

Properties along areas of Fairground Hill Road, Old Plank Road and Criswell Road could be added to the hazard map. Officials said letters would be sent to all property owners who could be affected by the move, but there was no immediate information on how many people or parcels are being considered for inclusion.

The potential move comes after the Federal Emergency Management Agency undertook a nationwide redrawing of its floodplain maps. The action has required every municipality to adopt or revise its floodplain ordinances to come in line with the new maps.
