SAXONBURG — The South Butler School Board recognized the girls varsity volleyball team for winning the AAA division WPIAL and state championships at Tuesday’s board meeting.

Six of the 13 team members, some of their parents and their coaches attended the meeting.

The board presented the players with proclamations from the Butler County commissioners.

Acting Superintendent Frank Prazenica Jr. read the proclamation, which cites team members for their play and academic dedication. The proclamation says the team won using “relentless defense with a well balanced attack and great self discipline” while maintaining their grade point averages.

“It was a dream season for us,” coach Diane Geist said. “We’re very proud of these girls.”

“It takes a lot to support a champion,” Prazenica said to the players’ parents.

In other business, the district announced that recently hired superintendent David Foley will start on Jan. 15.

In November, the board hired Foley, who has been the superintendent in West Middlesex Area School District in Mercer County for the last five years, as the superintendent at a salary of $150,000 a year. He will replace Prazenica, who has been serving as acting superintendent since former superintendent David Zupsic resigned in June.

Solicitor Thomas Breth said the board met with the teachers union on Nov. 30 and another negotiating session is scheduled for tonight. The teachers have been working without a contract for nearly three years.
