CENTER TWP — The township will keep taxes flat for the sixth straight year.

The supervisors voted Wednesday night to approve the township's 2018 operating budget of $1.938 million.

Residents will again pay 7.05 mills in taxes. A mill equals $1 in tax revenue for each $1,000 in a property's assessed value.

Supervisor Ron Flatt said he will ask the board in January to consider applying some of its surplus money to paying down some of the debt remaining on its public works building on Sunset Drive. The township had $111,000 in its reserve fund as of Wednesday.

The township borrowed $2 million to build the building in 2009 and is on pace to repay the loan in 10 years, which would be half of the loan's 20-year term, Flatt said.

During 2017, the township used Marcellus shale impact fee money to buy a new plow truck and a new pickup truck. No vehicle purchases or significant capital projects are slated for 2018.

Also at Wednesday night's meeting the supervisors unanimously approved a resolution prohibiting category-4 mini-casinos in the township.

Gov. Tom Wolf in October signed a bill allowing for up to 10 new minicasinos around the state that could operate between 300 and 750 slot machines and up to 40 table games.

Flatt noted that the supervisors can still rescind the resolution in the future if they would be interested in permitting a casino in the township. No developers have expressed interest yet, he said.
