A Butler County nonprofit organization will restore an eroding stream bank in Worth Township thanks to a grant announced Thursday.

Stream Restoration, a nonprofit organization based in Mars, will receive $125,450 from a Growing Greener grant through the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The money will be used to restore part of Slippery Rock Creek that runs along Slippery Rock Campground off West Park Road and then beneath Interstate 79, said Tim Danehy, one of Stream Restoration's directors.

The stream is about 50 to 60 feet across in that area and is often used by boaters, Danehy said.

In the last 10 to 15 years, it has eroded banks and started to threaten the campground and some trees near the shore.

“There is significant erosion where the banks are being undercut. There are vertical walls in a lot of places,” he said.

Stream Restoration is administering the grant in partnership with the Slippery Rock Watershed Coalition and the campground, which is providing matching funds and access to the stream.

The work will involve stabilizing the banks, planting vegetation, such as willow trees and installing boulders to prevent erosion.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced 106 grant awards, totaling $20.7 million, all for water clean up projects in and around Pennsylvania.
