Woman charged with 4 retail thefts
BUTLER TWP — A Butler woman faces hearings this month on four alleged shoplifting incidents at the same store at the Butler Commons shopping center.
Sabreana Ann Durkin, 21, is accused of targeting Walmart during a two-week period last month. She is charged with turning one of the suspected retail thefts into a robbery.
Butler Township police arrested Durkin on Nov. 11 and she is in Butler County Prison on $32,000 bail. She is also being held on a bench warrant out of Westmoreland County.
Durkin is believed to have first stole from the store about 6:50 p.m. Oct. 14, when she left pushing a shopping cart containing a car seat valued at $159 that she did not pay for, according to court documents.
On. Oct. 17, a man returned the item for a gift card. He apparently was unaware that it was stolen.
Police said surveillance video showed Durkin arrive at the store with the man. She stayed at the vehicle when he went into the store.
Five days after the first theft, police said, Durkin was back at the store. This time, at about 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19, she left with a cart loaded with a “pack 'n play” crib worth $139. She got her sister to unwittingly return the item Oct. 22 for a gift card, according to police.
Police allege Durkin also on Oct. 22 stole children's toys valued at $77.91 from the store.
Around 2 p.m. Oct. 29, Durkin was back at the store, documents said, where she failed to pay for eight items of clothing worth a combined $54.60 while using the self-checkout registers.
When an employee tried to stop Durkin from leaving, police said, she discarded her shopping cart and tried to run around the worker.
She is accused of pushing the employee away and running out into the parking lot. In her getaway, according to a police affidavit, Durkin ran out of her sandals and nearly knocked over other customers. She fled in a vehicle.
Police said they eventually got a tip where Durkin had been staying. They found her at the home on the 300 block of North Elm Street in Butler.
She is charged with robbery, four counts of retail theft, three counts of receiving stolen property, and harassment and disorderly conduct.
Preliminary hearings for Durkin are set for Nov. 30 at the office of District Judge Kevin O'Donnell.
