Much interior and exterior work is still going on at the Marriott Springhill Suites in the Centre City project downtown.

Butler Redevelopment Authority board members received an update on the project at their Thursday meeting from Veronica Walker, acting executive director and operations manager.

Contractors are installing heating, ventilation and cooling systems, plumbing and wiring, Walker said.

The last of the shower doors, carpeting and tile are being installed, she said.

The concrete contractor is demolishing the sidewalk along Jefferson Street to prepare to pour new sidewalks and grading and landscaping work is moving along, Walker said.

“They still have a lot of work to do especially on Cedar Street,” Arthur Cordwell, authority rehabilitation inspector, said about additional sidewalk construction.

He said he hopes the work gets done before concrete plants shut down for the winter.

“They’re getting there, but it’s taking time,” Cordwell said.

Everybody involved in the sale of the hotel to a new investor hopes the transaction is completed before city council has to repay the $2 million loan it borrowed for the authority to help fund the construction on Dec. 6.

“All parties are being communicated with,” solicitor Thomas Breth said. “Everybody wants to see the deal go through in a timely manner. It’s in everybody’s best interest that the deal gets done and the debt paid off.”

Fred Reese, authority board chairman, said all the board can do is “wait and see.”

Delays in completing the hotel spurred S & P Global to lower the city bond rating this year to BB+, which signifies noninvestment grade bonds.
